Boxed Up

I thought I'd share my new storage/display plan for my minifees. Usually they sit on my desk, I picked up a great teddy bear chair off ebay for super cheap and thats where my girls spend the majority of their time. The chair itself is currently occupied by my old Dollzone/minifee hybrid. She's basically a very fancy head stand. I put a MNF neckpiece onto the DZ body so I could house whichever of my floating heads is least in use.

Anyway, we had an overcrowding situation. My desk is getting swamped in dolls, which is both good and bad! I toyed with the idea of creating room boxes for them, I've seen some very spiffy looking living areas for dolls on DoA, but ultimately that just takes up way too much space. In the end I came up with an idea to do art boxes instead. Retablos inspired shrines to hang on my wall where I could perch one doll per box. The first one of finished and here's the end result. Excuse the crappy lighting, it's a pain to get lights down there and then she's half way up a wall anyway!

Her box hangs just above my computer so she's in sight all the time, and if I want her I can just reach up and grab her. I'm loving the arty, quirky look of it, and that it's one less doll cluttering up my desk. I never have the curtains down here open so she's never exposed to sunlight so it's all working out well.

I've left room on the wall next to her for the next box. I'm currently working on a candy-coloured blue box for my Luka. I'm still getting together her outfit and what not so it'll be a while before the box or the doll are ready. But, seeing as her wig and corset arrived here's a sneak peak of her in the box. She's going to be a circus carny; a sword swallowing magician type. Don't ask. Very under construction.

Oh thats an amazing idea to store your girls! I wish I could do something similar but my walls are plasterboard >_< Not easy to attach things to them!
I really love your Luka too! I saw your post in DoA and I thought she had a lil Carny ring leader thing going on!! :D xoxo

I think our place is plasterboard too, or drywall or something like that, but I did see these: plasterboard fixings. But you're right, anything beyond nails is a total pain!

I'm glad she's recognizably a carny girl lol!

Oh wow!~ The retablo idea is great. I'm totally loving your dolls. Love Luka's look! Did I mention I once had a mouse named Luka, always loved the name.

The box idea is brilliant. When I eventually get my doll, I'd love to store her in a box like this. Have you thought about selling custom boxes on DoA? Could be fun. :)

Love the carny, baton-twirling twist you have with your Luka. Very kooky, and very cool. :D

I LOVE the box idea! I have been wanting to get some old boxes just for displaying my little owls and things, but this is a great doll idea.

Grief, that is the best idea! I wish I could do the same with my girls but alas, I DO open curtains during the day. Right now my PKFs and LTFs have a whole shelf in my bookcase to themselves and I've got a gauzy black drape hung over it to cut down the light exposure.
I love the idea of decorating each box to match each girl's personality though ... very clever :)

That's a really graet way to store your dolls. But I gotta ask, aren't you terribly afraid that she'll just decide to fall down?

No, there's plenty of space for her to sit solidly. The box is nailed up there and it's not moving anytime soon. Short of an earthquake I don't see her coming down accidentally. I think she's probably safer up there out of the way than anywhere else. Aside from just keeping her in her box which I won't do.

I sure would love directions on how to make one of those boxes! Your DZ Fei is going to be a circus girl as I'm now into circus themes...

More in email.

Oh how exciting! The boxes are pretty easy and a lot of fun to make. I'll give you a rundown of how I did it in an email.

What a fabulous way to display your dolls!
